Sleep Deprived

I’m the type of person that needs at least 7.5-8 hours of sleep a night. Actually, if I didn’t set an alarm I could sleep for 12 hours straight. Yes, I love sleeping. Ideally, I would be able to sleep 9 hours a night, but in graduate school that just isn’t possible. So I usually settle for 8. Not bad.

What is bad is the fact that I haven’t slept for more than 6.5-7 hours per night for the past week.
I’m tired.

I know I’m tired because I had my usual two cups of coffee this morning as I was getting ready and I still don’t feel awake. I’m about to go to the break room and pour myself another cup.

I know I’m tired because my roommate asked me this morning if I heard what happened last night. I didn’t. Apparently she got home at 11:30 (I was already in bed. I heard her come in, but must have fallen asleep soon after). She said she was awake until 3am because our neighbors wouldn’t stop screaming at each other. She said it sounded like they were throwing televisions at the wall. She said they were playing their music so loudly our walls were shaking. She said they went outside and continued screaming at each other. Finally, she got fed up and called the cops. She said the cops showed up and resolved whatever was happening so that she was finally able to go to bed. I didn’t hear any of this because I slept through the entire ordeal. I must have been tired.

I can’t wait to go home after work tonight, put on my pajamas, and crawl onto the couch to watch some mindless reality TV. I might also have to include some wine and cheese… and maybe some chocolate too. Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

And yes, I realize I just wrote an entire post about sleeping and being tired, but I don’t care. I’m too tired to think about anything else.

  4. I absolutely love to sleep. I look forward to it, and the later I go to sleep, the harder I sleep. Nothing wakes me up. I try to get at least eight hours a night, but that hasn’t happened lately.

    I feel your pain! My dog’s been poorly this week and so has taken to sleeping on the bed (I feel too sorry for him to move him) but I have never had such bad sleep ever!!

    I too will be getting my pjs on when I get home with dinner, my laptop and a glass of wine! x

    I feel your pain! My dog’s been poorly this week and so has taken to sleeping on the bed (I feel too sorry for him to move him) but I have never had such bad sleep ever!!

  17. agreed! sleep schedules in college are never easy! i always made it on maybe 6 hours of sleep in college. now? heck no! I’m with ya on the 9 hours.

    I’m a sleep lover too! I could sleep the day away. What you need is one full day of rest. I mean like a sick day! Take the weekend off. I mean you just finished that paper and all so relax for a day to catch up on your sleep. your body will thank you!

    I hear ya dude! Grad school is killing me and I’m exhausted. In fact this post inspired me to take an hour nap so I’m gonna go do that. Not to say that your blog puts me to sleep – it doesn’t. You know what I mean.

    Get some sleep yourself!

    Oh and I have a theory that fresh orange helps people to stay awake… or anything citrus. Maybe that will help. 🙂

  35. I can function on very little sleep but I do love to sleep. I love the weekends for the very reason of sleeping in. Sounds like you have some interesting neighbors. I’m glad that you slept through the ordeal.

  39. I seriously could not function the last few days because of lack of sleep. I need about 7-8 hours too although I can’t sleep in like I used to. I do miss it.

  41. why is it that once we leave college we actually need way more sleep?! i used to get by on an average of 5 hours – and was perfectly fine. now…if i don’t get at least 8 i’m dragging.

  51. I am completely with you. Sleep is my friend. It truly is a priority in my life and my boyfriend thinks that is crazy. I can’t help it. It makes me FEEL good!

    And boy, I didn’t realize how heavy my eyes were until I read this post…uh oh.

  53. I wrote in a blog post once that I felt like the only grad student in America who consistently needs (and gets) 8 hours of sleep a night, and several others told me they were the same way. I’ve been getting 5-6 hours some nights, and I just can’t do it.

According to the American Medical Association 80% of all illnesses are due to stress. You need to help your body reduce the stress it is feeling. Here is a little unknown secret: Adaptogens.
