Holding Pattern

I’ve been feeling a bit off lately. I’m not full fledged depressed or lonely, but I’m definitely not all smiles and optimism either.

I’m assuming this feeling is coming from work. We’re still in a “holding pattern” as my supervisor calls it.

I’m on the payroll which means I’ll be receiving my first ever grown-up job pay check on Friday, but I’m not really working yet. Our office is still in the growing stages. Our desks were ordered on Monday and should be delivered tomorrow or Thursday. We have a few computers, but no internet- the IT people are coming tomorrow. We have the suite leased, and a few office supplies on the few bookshelves lining the walls, but that’s about it.

So all of this means that I spend most of my time at home corresponding through e-mails and phone calls. I’ve been doing a lot of community outreach with my co-workers setting up meeting times with other agencies. Some days we are so bored we create our own “team building” events like going to see Whip It and having lunch at Panera, all on work time. It’s quite awesome actually. But after five consecutive days of sitting around watching Taylor Swift videos, working out and spending two hours at a time walking around Target, I want something more… rewarding.

That’s why I got a job in the first place. If I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom single person, I would have made that happen. My supervisor says our office should be up and running by the first week in November. Two and half more weeks. I may go crazy. Today I’m getting paid to meet my co-workers at Office Depot to make a list of other office furniture/supplies we need. I’m thinking a label maker, heavy duty hole punch, and dry erase markers are must-haves. Umm, how sad is that? My life has come to the pathetic point where the most exciting event of my day is buying office supplies.

I really hope these next few weeks start looking up.

  1. I see how you would feel that way. But it’ll pick up soon enough, so I would just try to enjoy the downtime while it lasts!

  2. obviously, I have NO LIFE because the thought of getting paid to shop for office supplies, meet at panera and see Whip it sound like a great time to me.

but I know that you would like to be putting all of your education and knowledge to use with clients.

Things will get settled probably sooner than you may realize and there may come a time down the road that you will miss these days of paid downtime.

  3. Ugh, that’s a bummer girl! BUT, once the office is set-up and ready to go I bet it will be SO FUN working at a brand new place and I bet that things will begin to get better and the job will become more rewarding after that.

I guess for now, enjoy the downtime while you can! I totally understand how you feel, though. I get the same way when I have nothing to do!

  4. That would get old quickly. I know all about feeling like you’re in a holding pattern, I often feel like that myself in terms of work. Hopefully after the next few weeks you will be so busy that you forget what downtime during the day feels like. Hang in there, time is passing quickly.

  5. I can definitely see how that feels for you but getting paid to go shopping at Office Max would be so exciting for me!! It’s funny how people want the opposite of what you have now. Most of the times I wish I worked from home but then I know if I did I’d wish I worked in an office.

I’m sure time will go by quickly and you’ll be in the office before you know it!

  6. That transition time is the hardest part of coming into a new workplace, and I can imagine if the workplace its self is in transition that would be even harder!

It’ll break- it has to- and in the mean time, I vote you rent old movies and nap in the afternoon. =)

  7. It’s gotta be tough, but hopefully things will pick up soon.

  8. Sounds totally unpleasant. Maybe there’s something you can do/read that will better prepare you for your new job? Just an idea, cause I know watching youtube videos can get old 🙂

  9. Sorry you’re feeling down. The good news is the down time will come to an end. Enjoy the time while you have it…. Focus on the future and the good times to come!!

  10. Ugh. I hate that at-loose-ends feeling where you’re just… waiting for things to start. But it’s good that you know things WILL start, and in the grand scheme of things, it will be soon. Hang in there!

  11. Goodness! I could see how that would be appealing for a week or so, but after a while? I’d burn out, too.

Luckily, that isn’t all there is to the job and you do know that things will turn around soon(ish). I have no doubt that you are so eager to really start WORKING – especially because this is something you’re excited about!

Best of luck, my dear! And enjoy the free time while you have it!

  12. A break sounds really nice right now, but I totally lose my head when things don’t get rolling after a while. Sounds like things will pick up soon! Try to enjoy your time until then.

  13. Welcome to startup companies. Sometimes they take a minute or two to get their shit together, but once they’re off the ground, they’re awesome, because you get to have such a hand in everything.

  14. You’ll be busy with rewarding work soon enough. Just keep your chin up.

  15. I can understand how incredibly frustrating it must be; I don’t like to sit around at work when I’m supposed to be working (except for the moments I steal to read blogs!) Hopefully things start to pick up soon and you’ll be thrown into work and love every minute of it. At least you’re getting paid =)

  16. I hear exactly what you’re saying. I think just enjoy the downtime while you have because hopefully it will be gone soon enough!

  17. Being at home like that would make me stir crazy. Here’s hoping the time passes quickly for you!
