I got the internship. Yay?

I got the internship and I start working on Thursday.

I interviewed on Wednesday, got fingerprinted on Friday, got the call that I was clear to start working today, and spoke with my supervisor this morning. It’s all happening very fast, but that’s what needed to happen because it was getting close to my deadline. And because I will be working for a Jewish organization, I have a few days to prepare before I start my internship on Thursday. I can’t decide if I’m excited or dreading it. Maybe a little of both.

Surprisingly, the call with my supervisor this morning went quite well, and I like her a little bit more than I did during the interview last week. She was less… weird. We had an actual conversation and because we were only speaking over the phone I couldn’t tell that she was playing with her hair and avoiding eye contact the entire time. I’m hoping it will go just as well when we start working together.

Thursday morning we’re co-leading a grief group together. I’ve never led a group before, except for once, last week during my Group Counseling class. In fact, I only went to my first group therapy meeting (as a member) last month. I’m excited about everything that I will learn and I’m hoping the group members will be open to having a new co-leader. I know I have a lot to learn, but that’s what an internship is for, right? Right.

Now this is when you leave me comments telling me how fabulous I am going to be and how great I am and that I have nothing to worry about. Because it’s all true. Thanks, loves.

  1. Ahhh that’s so exciting! I’m sure everything will work out well, just make the most of it and kick its ass. And the internships required, right? Graduating is what the big picture is.

That’s such good news! I’m glad you were able to find something so quickly.

I’ve never been to a group counseling session so I’ll be interested to hear how it goes.

And of course, you’ll be great πŸ™‚

  5. That’s great news! Yay! I know it feels like a mixed blessing now but think of it as a learning experience for now and it will help you to decide what you want to do next.

  7. Congratulations Ashley! Oh goodness, what exciting times for you. Not to worry, you’ll have the words when you need them, and the poise to handle everything that comes your way. Why? Because you’re amazing, of course.

And you’re right, an internship is for learning. You’ll improve, and grow, and tell us all about it. Right? Right. Now get out there and knock ’em dead ; )

I have a lot of group experience – so feel free to pick my brain (or blog) if you ever need to. I’m also going to go against all blog/therapy rules and give some unsolicited advice πŸ˜› The things I’m grateful I was told, and wish I knew in advance!

    * DO make sure that your supervisor for your internship is appropriate and actually teaches you. They should be able to answer questions, and back up their methods. Question them – it’s not rude – it’s necessary.

    * DO read Yalom. His book The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy is the basis for all group therapy. It’s a WEALTH of good information on group dynamics that can throw any good group off (or on) the right track.

    * Groups give you 2nd chances, and are open to questions asked of them as a whole. This can be helpful in an internship – you rarely get the “insider view” of a group.

    * The goal is always to have the group do the work. If you’re leaving exhausted, you’re doing the heavy lifting – which is backwards. Allow awkward silences – one of them will break it. πŸ™‚

Good Luck! I love group-work, and I hope you do to!
